“We could never, even in our wildest dreams, have imagined a turnout like this”. Alfred Bosch, the Barcelona Decideix spokesman, was visibly moved as he announced the final turnout figure in the Referendum on Independence for Catalonia in Barcelona.

With 44.65% of the votes counted so far, the Yes vote has overwhelmingly won with 91.46% of the vote, while No votes totalled 7.32%. Blank null votes were registered as 1.22%, while spoiled papers were 0.05% of ballots cast.

As of 5.00pm, the Barcelona Decideix organisation has registered a turnout of 15.21%. This figure has far exceeded the 10% turnout which the referendum organisers had set as a threshold for success of the vote.

Turnout at 12 noon was registered at 8.3%. This figure suggests that the final turnout will almost certainly exceed the 10% turnout figure, which the organisation has set as the threshold indicating success.
